Al and Cathy's Island Transformation

Al and Cathy repainted their living/dining/kitchen walls, which made for a nice freshening up of the space - then Cathy started playing with stool ideas for the island (they had barstools there already that were sort of a country style and stained the same color as the floor and cabinets so she was thinking something more contemporary and in a different color). While thinking about stools she realized that the island would look more like an island and less like a half wall if they added some trim pieces and painted it a darker color. These pictures don't even do this project justice, it looks amazing in real life!

She also had the idea to paint the wood corbels under the countertop, the base color is now the color that is on the walls, and then she dry brushed areas of the wood with the darker color. Looks so much better painted! What a terrific transformation - not gonna lie, after seeing this I started walking around my house trying to find an area I could add trim pieces hahahahah! Here's what they did ~

 1. Before adding trim pieces and painting the corbels:

2. Design the pattern where trim pieces would go, figure the spacing, draw in with a pencil:

3. Cut and connect the trim boards:

 4. Attach to the island wall - Al thought he was going to glue them on but he ended up nailing it on (also the first coat of the painted corbels):

5. Al cut a piece of wider trim board to go under the countertop, fill the nail holes:

6: Experimenting with base color - they weren't sure if they wanted the same color as the walls or darker:

 7. Darker won out:

8. Didn't like how the baseboard looked matching the wall color, so they painted it the same color as the rest of the island - now it looks more like a freestanding piece:

 9. Close-up of the finished corbel:
